PROD: THE NATIONAL FILM AND TELEVISION SCHOOL
Living under the shadow of her father and coach, Alicia, an aspiring BMX racer wants to thrive and become her own self but she first needs to overcome a dark incident from her past.
RIDER is my NFTS graduation film.
Based on my personal experience as a BMX rider, I made this short film with the intention to shine a light on the world of BMX racing and the challenges and risks that come with it. It was important for me to make a film about obsession and how far people would go to pursue their passion and the cost that came with it. Whether it’s physical or psychological. I also wanted to make a film that captured the feeling of being on a bike and to be as much as possible inside the lead character’s mindset.
My intention was to make a visceral and cinematic experience whilst following a clear and emotional story arc with very little dialogue. To make something different with the genre of sports movies and incorporating a coming of age feel to it.
I was also fascinated by the idea of a father/coach and daughter/champion relationship and how these character’s emotions would come to life on a backdrop of a violent and intense world.
I am currently in the early stages of developing a feature length version based on this idea.
